The famous Hussain Sagar Lake is held back on the eastern side by the Tank Bund Road which helps connect Hyderabad to Secunderabad. The other sides are covered by the Necklace Road, which runs around the lake. It looks like a necklace from the sky, hence the name.
Built across a tributary of the river Musi, the Hussain Sagar is a huge man-made lake, which has been in existence since 1562 (Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah’s reign). It was named after its designer, Hussain Shah Wali. The artificial lake is perpetually fed by canals from the Musi River. Spread across an area of 5.7 sq kms and a maximum depth of 32 feet, Hussain Sagar supplied water to Hyderabad city before Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar took over the duty. A massive statue of the Gautam Buddha, erected in 1992, stands in the middle of the lake and is probably the most distinguishable feature of the lake now. In 1946, the road on the Tank Bund was widened by the then prime minister of Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar, Sir Mirza Ismail. The most recent widening and beautification of the road took place in 1987-88.
Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N T Rama Rao erected 33 statues of famous people of Andhra Pradesh on the sides of the Tank Bund road and it is one among many attractions for visitors to the Tank Bund Area. Necklace Road, also has many public picnic spots. Attractions in the area include, Lumbini Park, NTR Garden, Sanjeevaiah Park, Indira Park, Prasad’s Imax, Jalvihar, People’s Plaza, the Katta Maisamma temple, Saidanimaa’s tomb and the Pakistan Patton tank, a 1971 War Trophy given to the 54th Infantry Division, which is now on display here. Besides Tank Bund road and Necklace road, MMTS Train stations at Necklace Road, James Street and Sanjeevaiah Park provide connectivity to the vicinity of Hussain Sagar lake from all parts of the city. The area around Hussain Sagar has over recent years been developed for providing family fun and entertainment. There are many food joints, recreational facilities and jogging tracks on Necklace Road. But, we see the area fast becoming a hangout for dating couples and seedy youngsters who try to harass people.
Famous buildings that flank the lake include the Secunderabad Sailing Club and Hotel Marriott on the northern side, Tank Bund road and Necklace road, MMTS Train stations at Necklace Road, James Street and Sanjeevaiah Park on the southern banks while Raj Bhavan is located on the western side. Outdoor eating joints are situated on Eat Street on the western banks of the lake.
Hussain Sagar is also a popular sailing hot spot. Sailing Regattas have been organized here since 1971 jointly by the EME Sailing Association and the Secunderabad Sailing Club. Since 1984, Hyderabad Sailing Week has been conducted. The affair has grown from 10 laser entries in 1984 to over hundred over the last few years.
